Lebanese army strengthens deployment in S. Lebanon: statement

BEIRUT, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) — The Lebanese army began on Wednesday strengthening its deployment in the country’s southern Litani sector and extending the state authority there in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
A statement released by the Lebanese army said that this step comes within the framework of the Lebanese government’s commitment to implement the UN Security Council resolution 1701, particularly concerning strengthening the deployment of the army and all security forces in the Litani area.
“In this context, the military units concerned are conducting a transition from several areas to the southern Litani sector, where they will be stationed in the designated locations,” said the statement.
Israel’s security cabinet on Tuesday night approved a ceasefire deal with Lebanon, paving the way for an end to a nearly 14-month conflict.
According to the ceasefire deal, the Lebanese army will take control of its territory over the next 60 days, while ensuring that Hezbollah will not regroup there. Israel will gradually withdraw, and civilians will return home. ■
